Keys, mallets, and a music degree I went back for

I have played in groups for more than fifteen years. I went back to Brevard College for a music performance degree and graduated in 2008, which remains one of the better decisions I have made.

High Flying Criminals

An R&B, soul and funk project based in Brevard, North Carolina. I play keys. It is the most fun I have on a stage, and the band is full of people who are better than me, which is the correct way to be in a band.

Odd Meters

A jazz fusion duo with Jon Morrow, who plays a custom Novax eight-string hybrid guitar. Two people, odd time signatures, and a lot of room to get it wrong in interesting ways.

Why it belongs on this site

Playing with other people is the clearest version of a thing I keep running into everywhere else. You cannot think your way to a groove. You have to listen harder than you play, leave space, and trust that somebody else is going to fill it. Teaching is like that. So is running a studio.

Before any of the bands I spent about a decade as an audio engineer, which is where I learned that most of a good sound is decisions made long before anyone hits record.

Content to add. Embeds would carry this page: a couple of tracks, a live video, and a photograph from a show. The old site had screenshots rather than real media, so this is a chance to fix that.
